The Douro region is the oldest vineyard in the world, declared as such in 1756 by the Marquis de Pombal, given its unique clay soils and exposure to the sun.
Its terraced hills are used to produce wines that correspond to the "Porto" and "Douro" denominations of origin, while the authenticity of its cultural landscape has also contributed extensively to the Alto Douro Vinhateiro being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2001.
With regard to historic heritage, the Douro region is also an important place in northern Portugal. It was home to prehistoric towns as well as Roman, Moorish and Christian settlements. Some of these gems are still standing today.
The region's dazzling roads with views of the river allow visitors to enjoy impressive scenery after every bend. Train, via the Douro Line, and boat are other alternatives that will allow you to explore a unique, idyllic setting.
